Do water softeners need their filters changed every year?

I bought a water softener last year. I am getting calls from the company stating that it’s been a year and I need my filter replaced. Is this right? Does a filter need to be changed and a water softener system serviced EVERY year? Thanks!

Yes you do need to change them every year for the filters that is,as far as a service call to service your unit ,im not sure..My husband is a plumber and has installed many water softners, you can also purchase the filters and change them your self. Some of that tuff is a way to get money for a service call…We always change our own filter….

I would say most filters should be changed (or cleaned) at least once a year at a minimum. If the filter traps very fine particles then it may need replaced more often. Filters are rated in microns, and the smaller the micron size of the filter element, the smaller the particle it will remove. A 20-micron filter will remove particles 20 microns or larger in diameter, while a 5-micron filter will remove sediment 5 microns or bigger. Sediment filters work by straining out the sediment and holding it. As the filter collects sediment, it gradually plugs up and reduces the water flow. At some point, the filter is plugged and should be cleaned (if possible) or replaced.

It also depends on the size or rated flow rate of the filter and canister. Filters have a rated life that may range from 1 month to one year, and it is dependent on the factors I already mentioned. Look for the filter life for your type of filter and clean or replace it as recommended.

Water softeners are very simple systems. Other than the valve/timer controls, there are very few parts. If you keep clean filters and salt levels above the tank brine, and the softener tank is clean and working properly, it shouldn’t need much service at all. There are many overpriced systems (Kineteco is probablly the worst) where I believe people are taken advantage of.
