Why does my central A/C unit leak water from underneath the unit soaking my air filter.?

My A/C unit is in a closet inside my home. In mid summer when it’s the hottest and humidity is high my unit will leak a lot of water from the unit which will usually soak the filter and puddle the water that eventually begins to saturate the surrounding drywall. I understand the whole condensation explanation and even checked the pvc drain pipe for clogs, but still can’t figure out why so much water collects under my unit.

  • Paul in San Diego says:

It might be at a slight angle such that the water doesn’t completely drain out of it and it collects when the condensation is high. You can probably check it with a level to see if the unit is at a slight angle. Otherwise, someone might have improperly installed the unit and the condensate drain, such that it doesn’t drain the condensate properly.

That happens were I am in South Texas it is just so humid it doesn’t have enough time to evaporate or drain..ALSO.You can use drano in the drain pipe..maybe a clog deep you cant find!..see if that helps

Checking the drain for being partially plugged is a good place to start. Also the condensate pan should be pitched to the drain (preferable 1/4″ per 12-18″) don’t forget to check the actual fitting connections for the drain have seen the pvc connections leak many times. Hole in condensate pan? last but not least if the air flow is to great across a vertical coil with a horizontal air flow, I have seen condensate get blown off the coil and over/out of the pan creating wet filters & puddles. Correction for this condition is to reduce the air flow but not so much as to reduce heat transfer that would lead to a freezing coil condition.
