it depends how you like your water. some people do not like to drink water with the minerals (or hardness) in municipal water or in their own private well; and some people do not like scale build-ups in water heaters, pipes, dishwashers and shower heads, reducing its flow.

Always with well water or in most rural areas. I would put a sediment filter on any water softener to make it last longer.

If your water is too hard put in the best you can find, it’ll pay for itself.
